Use apps in private channels in Microsoft Teams

Apps can be added and used in private channels in Microsoft Teams. Apps are managed per channel, so only the apps added to a private channel are available to its members.

This lets channel owners control which apps are available and who can manage them.

How apps work in private channels

  • Apps are not automatically available in a private channel, even if they are installed for the team.

  • Each private channel has its own set of apps.

  • The first person to use an app in a private channel may be asked to add the app to that channel.

  • Channel owners can control who can add or remove apps.

Add an app to a private channel

Apps must be added to each private channel before members can use them.

Add an app when you use it

  1. Go to the private channel.

  2. Find the app from an app entry point, such as:

    • Apps on the left side of Teams
    • Add a tab in the channel
  3. Select the app.

  4. If the app is not already added, select add the app to this channel.

  5. Select Add Add button .

The app becomes available to all members of the private channel. This step is required once per channel.

If you do not have permission to add apps, you can see the app but cannot add it.

Manage or remove apps in a private channel

Channel owners and permitted members can manage apps for a private channel.

  1. Go to the private channel.

  2. Select More options Microsoft Teams more options next to the channel name.

  3. Select Manage channel.

  4. Select the Apps tab.

From here, you can:

  • Add apps to the channel

  • Remove apps from the channel

  • View all apps added to the channel

Members without permission can view the apps but cannot make changes.

Control who can add or remove apps

Channel owners can control whether members are allowed to manage apps.

  1. Go to the private channel.

  2. Select More options Microsoft Teams more options button next to the channel name.

  3. Select Manage channel.

  4. Turn Allow members to add or remove apps from this channel on or off.

  • On: Members can add or remove apps.

  • Off: Only channel owners can manage apps.

This setting is on by default.

Note

  • Installing an app for a team does not add it to private channels.
  • Apps must be added separately to each private channel.
  • Team‑level app policies and admin settings still apply.
  • App availability depends on whether the app supports private channels and is allowed by your organization.
