Recall an email message in Outlook for Mac

Applies To
Outlook for Microsoft 365 for Mac Outlook 2024 Outlook 2024 for Mac Outlook 2021 for Mac

Message recall is available after you select Send and is available only if both you and the recipient have a Microsoft 365 work or school email account in the same organization. Messages sent to or from a Hotmail, Gmail, or live.com account can't be recalled.

Note

This feature is available in Outlook for Mac 16.94 (Build 25010522) or later and is not supported in legacy Outlook for Mac.

  1. Select Sent in the folder pane, then double-click the sent message to open it in a separate window.

  2. From the ribbon, select the Recall button, then select OK in the confirmation window. Alternatively, you can use Control-click to open the shortcut menu for your message and select Recall from there.

    Note

If you don't have the Recall button, you can customize your toolbar to add it. For more information, go to Customize your toolbar in Outlook for Mac.

  3. Shortly after selecting Recall, you'll receive a Message Recall Report in your inbox. Select the link in that message to see whether your recall has succeeded, is pending, or failed.
