Promote or demote rows and column headers (Power Query)

Applies To
Excel for Microsoft 365 Excel 2024 Excel 2021

When a table is created, Power Query often automatically detects column headers and promotes them if necessary. However, you can also promote a first row to column headers or demote column headers to the first row when you need to.

Procedure

  1. To open a query in Excel, locate one previously loaded from the Power Query Editor, select a cell in the data, and then select the Query tab and select Edit. For more information see Create, load, or edit a query in Excel.

Note

If you're using Excel for the Web, select the Data tab, then select Get Data > Launch Power Query Editor.

  1. Do one of the following:

    • To promote the first row to column headers, select Home (or Transform in Excel for the Web) > Use First Row As Headers.
    • To demote column headers to the first row, select Home (or Transform in Excel for the Web) select the arrow next to Use First Row As Headers, and then select Use Headers as First Row.
